Change your thinking and you can change your future.
— Jon Foncesca

That's just one way that Jon Fonseca, an In-Prison Program Associate, views the transformative work that we are doing here at RISE.

Jon has been with RISE for two years now, and he has reckoned with the idea of incarceration as an experience that is more than physical.

"I believe incarceration is often a mindset," Jon shared, "and when the mind is renewed, life can be transformed. Change your thinking, and you can change your future."

Through his role here at RISE, Jon has the opportunity to change the minds of In-Prison Program participants who are currently incarcerated at the Omaha Correctional Center (OCC).

"Teaching is how I show love, by walking alongside those we serve; not just pointing to better paths, but living them out myself," Jon expressed. "In doing so, I help bring out the best in others, giving them space to grow and walk their own journey with confidence and purpose."

At RISE, our graduates embark on their journey toward a second chance by first engaging in our In-Prison Program. Program participants invest in their own character development and prepare for successful reentry through a rigorous six-month curriculum, culminated by a business pitch competition and graduation ceremony filled with RISE staff, volunteers, friends, and family.

"I believe my work deeply impacts our graduates because I’ve walked the path they’re on," Jon reflected on his own post-incarceration journey. "I know the struggle, the setbacks, and the strength it takes to rise."

Jon helps a RISE participant roll his sleeves up.
To now stand on a platform and teach from that lived experience is more than an opportunity — it’s purpose. It’s proof that change is possible, and that they can rise too.

Though Jon is largely impactful as an individual, he considers himself as a piece of a much larger puzzle where every piece holds purpose.

"What I do today will echo into tomorrow, and together, we’re building something that will outlast us all," Jon contemplated.

Beyond RISE, Jon is a family man and that’s one of his greatest sources of pride.

"I’m a devoted husband and a proud father of five," Jon expressed, "and everything I do is rooted in love, legacy, and leadership."

As a side hustle, Jon owns and operates a landscaping business that’s been thriving for over three years. "What started as a simple way to bond with my oldest son has grown into a powerful tool for family connection, community impact, and generational growth," Jon shared.

"Wealth isn’t just about money, it’s a mindset. And now, I get to plant that mindset in others. I help people see what’s possible, believe in their potential, and take action to build something that lasts."

When considering his contributions to RISE's mission, Jon overwhelmingly expressed gratitude. "Being part of this journey is the greatest blessing," Jon noted. "Planting hope and sharing a smile, even as others face the toughest battles of their lives, is where true impact begins."

This week, Jon will begin recruiting for Cohort 11 at OCC, his second ever cohort as a facilitator.

As a teacher, Jon indicated that he doesn't only speak to share about his fall, but to highlight his rise as well.

"Every part of the journey matters, and I’m grateful to walk in purpose and impact."
