What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday History

Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 by partners, The 92nd Street Y and United Nations Foundation, as a way to rally charitable giving amid the mass consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

It was a simple idea…encouraging people to do good. To be “radically generous”.

Over the years, Giving Tuesday has turned into a global movement that has inspired hundreds of millions of people to give and celebrate generously.

When is Giving Tuesday 2025?

We’re glad you asked! Giving Tuesday 2025 is Tuesday, December 2nd, 2026!

Why Giving Tuesday Matters to Organizations Like RISE

It Gives Crucial Year-End Momentum

Like the majority of Nebraska nonprofits and others across the world, RISE celebrates Giving Tuesday!

While many might say, “it’s just one day”…the truth is, Giving Tuesday matters to nonprofits like RISE because it helps raise vital funding to go towards our mission of breaking generational cycles of incarceration, it expands community awareness, and deepens long-term support.

Giving Tuesday acts as a launchpad, helping us build early momentum for our year-end fundraising goals. For RISE, this means more resources to support…

  • the work being done to change policies in the Nebraska legislature and eliminate barriers for the folks we serve.

  • the tools, materials, and staff we need to provide programming to our in-prison participants.

  • the families in the community navigating what life looks like with an incarcerated loved one and also what that looks like when they return home.

  • the RISE Business Academy entrepreneurs and the programming it takes to ensure their businesses launch, succeed, and grow.

  • the support staff educating the community about second chance hiring, reentry barriers, and the impact of incarceration.

It Amplifies Education About Reentry Barriers

Global days like Giving Tuesday give RISE a powerful platform to raise community awareness about reentry and second chances. They allow us to shine a brighter light on the housing, employment, and financial barriers people face when they return home after incarceration. With a wider audience rallying around generosity, we’re able to reach new volunteers, inspire new donors, and expand public understanding of the justice system.
